HALTERS

ROPE HALTERS /  BITLESS BRIDLE HALTERS

NEVER LEAVE A ROPE HALTER ON A HORSE THAT IS UNATTENDED. DO NOT TURN OUT A HORSE WEARING A ROPE HALTER. THEY ARE VIRTUALLY UNBREAKABLE SO IF YOUR HORSE GETS CAUGHT ON SOMETHING, SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH COULD RESULT.

NEVER LEAD A HORSE BY HOLDING ONTO OR PULLING ON THE NOSEBAND SECTION ABOVE THE FIADOR KNOT (the big knot under the chin).  THIS COULD CAUSE THE FIADOR KNOT TO LOOSEN AND POSSIBLY COME APART.  IT IS BEST TO USE A LEAD ROPE WITH A ROPE HALTER, BUT WHEN LEADING WITHOUT ONE, ALWAYS GRASP THE WHOLE FIADOR KNOT OR THE LOOPS BELOW THE FIADOR KNOT.

Click here to go directly to Types of Halters

All halters and bitless bridle halters - side pull halters and cross under halters - are hand tied using one continuous length of rope with true double overhand knots throughout the halter and the authentic fiador knot at the chin. Halter loops are sewn or whipped together with waxed polyester cord. Tie end is whipped with waxed polyester cord and dipped in rope sealant for a durable finished end with no metal to hurt you or your horse.

Your new rope halter should fit snugly at first - that is by design. I measure carefully then tighten the knots by hand. As you use it, your horse (who is much stronger than I am) will tighten the knots further and the halter will become slightly larger. The rope does not stretch, but as the knots get tighter, the halter will get bigger. I allow for this process when I make the halter so it will fit properly after a couple uses and not end up too big.

Also, by only hand-tightening the knots, you can make any adjustments, if necessary, when you first get your halter. After you have used the halter for a while, the double overhand knots will probably get so tight that any adjustment will become very difficult. However, the fiador knot under the chin - which is a sign of a well-made halter - will always remain adjustable so the nose opening can be altered if necessary. (An instruction sheet for doing this is included with every halter order.)  I sew or whip the halter loops together so any adjustments to the fiador knot will be even. This whipping/tacking, while not intended to be permanent, also serves as a reminder to keep the loops together – never attach lead ropes or reins to just one of the loops as this could destroy the fiador knot.

A Note about the Fiador Knot: The advantage of a fiador knot is that it can always be loosened and adjusted.  The disadvantage is that it can loosen "on its own".  This normally does not happen if you use a lead rope with your halter regularly.  If your halter is not being used much or is stored in a tack box and gets "stirred around", then the fiador could become loose.  It might happen with riding halters that do not usually have a lead rope attached. If the fiador becomes loose, the dimensions and "even-ness" of your halter could be affected.  Check the fiador knot often!  If it shows signs of loosening, grasp all strands of rope on each side and pull it tight again.  If you notice the loops below the knot are much smaller than when you got your halter, you will need to feed the rope from the other side through the knot and into the loops.  If they are larger, you will need to work the rope back the other direction. (Please call or email if you need help)

Please heed the warnings about attaching things only to both loops and about not pulling on the noseband sections.

To clean your rope halter: Soak in a bucket of water – add a little soap if really dirty (any laundry detergent will do – it’s polyester … like your clothes!), rub off any dirt that remains, rinse and hang to dry. DO NOT clean halters in a washing machine – the fiador knot could loosen. (Ask about my Repair Service)

For those of you who have been on my site before, you will notice that I have changed how I refer to some of my halters.  The terminology was a little confusing as to the side pull halters and what I used to call the bitless bridle - what I now refer to as the cross under halter.  Some people would refer to the side pull halter as a bitless bridle - which it is - but I always asked so I would know for sure which "bitless bridle" they wanted.  I no longer refer to any specific halter as a bitless bridle - you can attach reins to any of my halters so they can all be "bitless bridles".

The term "rein strap" also caused some confusion.  Some people thought they were actual reins and did not realize they are just the criss cross part of the bridle and that reins need to be ordered separately.  I now refer to them as "cross under straps".

Hopefully these clarifications will make things easier to understand.

REGULAR HALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Regular Rope Halters (called 2-knot halters by some) are a great training tool. Because of the thinner rope (relative to a nylon web or leather halter) it will be more uncomfortable for your horse to lean on the halter or ignore your cues - your horse will be more responsive. Rope halters are also lighter and less bulky than web or leather halters making them great for wearing under a headstall or folding up into a saddle bag to take along on a trail ride. I make halters in a variety of rope sizes, types and colors – from super soft to very stiff – so you can choose the level of firmness that suits your needs and is best for you and your horse at your particular stage of training. Remember, the thinner the rope and the stiffer the rope, the more aggressive the halter will be.

Regular Rope Halters with Chain Braid Noseband  Want to add some pizzazz to your halter but don't want to go all out with the braided knots?  This style has an additional strand of rope that is interwoven with the 2 normal strands across the nose to create a rounded, firmer, bulkier noseband.  I think it looks like a Celtic knot chain - thus the name.  A great way to ID what part goes over the top of the nose.  It also holds the noseband open so it is easier to put on.  Adds a splash of color to coordinate with reins or lead rope without breaking the bank.

The 3rd strand must be the 1/4" (or 9/32") soft double braid but I can make the chain braid noseband on any regular halter made with soft rope or stiff cord.

Not available for halters made with the 5/16" semi-stiff cord.

EXTRA KNOTS HALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Extra Knots Halters (like the ones used by Clinton Anderson - called 4-knot halters by some) have two additional knots on the top part of the noseband - between the two knots on the sides of the noseband that connect with the cheek pieces.  These "extra knots" are the same double overhand knots that make up the rest of the halter and are tied into the noseband as the halter is made.  Therefore, they are the same material - rope type and color - as the rest of the halter.  Hopefully this explanation will clear up any confusion about the possibility of "extra knots" being a different color.  (If you are interested in putting additional braided knots on the noseband, you could choose from several colors for that option.)

While a regular rope halter is much better for training than a nylon web or leather halter, an extra knots halter adds even more motivation. A stiff halter cord is the usual type of rope used, but extra knots halters can be ordered in any of the rope I carry. Adding extra knots to a soft halter may be all the extra "bite" that you need. Or, if you have a very disrespectful horse, a halter made of the thinner, stiffer cord with extra knots may get your message across much better.

BOSALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Bosalters are regular rope halters with Cowboy Knot braiding on the nose band using polyester lacing cord in your choice of color combination and pattern.  What a beautiful way to have unique, customized tack!

This braiding is not only decorative but creates a thicker, firmer bosal-type nose piece on the halter – thus the term "Bosalter" - a combination of a bosal and a halter. These are great for bitless riding - connect reins to the loops under the chin or I can make the halter with room to tie on reins above the fiador knot to make a traditional natural hackamore. The braiding stiffens the top of the noseband and at the same time increases the surface area keeping the noseband from digging into the face with the weight of the reins tied in or connected to the loops – better release.  Bosalters can also be used like regular halters with a lead rope, although they may not be as effective for intensive training.

Extra knots halters can also be made into Bosalters by braiding smaller Cowboy Knots in the three spaces between the halter knots.  This braiding decreases the prominence of the extra knots and will lessen, but not negate, their effectiveness.  When making a bosalter with an extra knots halter, I recommend using the lacing cord without the core to make the braided knots as thin as possible, allowing the  extra knots to do their job and provide more points of pressure.

I can add the braiding to a halter made with any of the rope or cord - soft, semi-stiff or stiff.  The braiding stiffens up the noseband of a soft halter so it is functional and decorative.  On the semi-stiff or stiff halters, it is mostly for decoration since the noseband is already stiff.

The noseband trim is a true braid, not just cord wrapped around the halter rope or simple knots tied along the length. You can choose one or two colors and the pattern of braiding:
Doubleweave Pattern (DW) – the second cord/color follows along beside the first one Noseband - DW - bk,neon gr.jpg (137456 bytes)
Interweave Pattern (IW) – the second cord/color is interwoven with the first one Nat Hack - Bosalter IW, PK - noseband.jpg (125019 bytes)

A braided knot on the tie end is included at no extra cost when ordering a bosalter (a $7.00 or $8.00 value depending on the pattern).

SIDE PULL HALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Side Pull Halters are versatile pieces of equipment – great for training or bitless riding. With a side pull halter, your reins are attached on the side of the nose - close to where they are attached when using a snaffle bit - making it a great transition tool.  You can send clear signals using your direct rein - great for flexing and working on turns.

It's versatility is wonderful.  You can do warm up ground work using a lead rope attached to the halter loops, then clip your reins to the rings and you're ready to ride.  No need to change equipment.  And when on the trail and you need to tie up - your halter is already there.  I ride my horse Brandy with an extra knots stiff side pull halter and it is great!

Side pull halters are available in regular, extra knots or bosalter styles in any of the halter rope I carry. The side pull halter is constructed in the same way as my regular or extra knots rope halters except, as I make it, I space the nose knots lower on the sides and tie in rings - solid brass or stainless steel - so reins can be attached. I also make the cheek pieces a bit longer so the noseband fits lower on the nose giving you more leverage. Then I attach an adjustable chin strap (made with lacing cord) to the rings so you can snug up the noseband. This keeps the side pull halter in the correct position and prevents it from riding up the face or sliding around the nose when you engage the reins.

With all riding halters - Check the fiador knot under the chin often.  If you do not usually have a lead rope attached, the fiador knot could become loose and the dimensions and even-ness of your halter could be affected.  If you see signs of loosening, grasp all strands of  rope on each side and pull to tighten the knot.  Always lead your horse by holding the fiador knot and/or the loops below the knot or attaching a lead rope.

INDIAN BOSAL SIDE PULL HALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Indian Bosal Side Pull Halters have become popular for bitless riding.  Most of the construction is the same as the side pull halter described above - nose knots spaced lower, cheek pieces a bit longer than my usual halter - but there is no need for a separate chin strap.  A third strand of rope goes over the noseband, criss crosses under the chin keeping the noseband in place, and each end becomes a rein connector.  When you pick up on one rein, the horse feels the pressure on the opposite side and will yield away from that pressure.  When you pick up on both reins, the noseband tightens up giving you more stopping power than a simple side pull.

I make the halter first (regular or extra knots), then loosen the noseband knots and feed the additional strand of rope through the knots, tie in small rings on each side, criss cross the rope and insert through the opposite ring, then tie a double overhand knot to make a loop on the end where you attach your reins.  (I no longer tie in metal rings at the rein end.  This way, you can choose any type of reins - with snaps or other connectors, or tie into the loops. Let me know if you want the metal rings and I can add them.)

The criss cross rope becomes part of the noseband so there will be 3 strands of rope across the top of the nose instead of 2 as on a normal rope halter.  The criss cross rope must be the 1/4" (or 9/32") soft rope but the halter can be made in any of the halter rope or cord - soft, semi-stiff or stiff.  Choose a matching or contrasting color for the criss cross  rope.

Style Options:

Chain Braid Noseband - the criss cross rope is interwoven with the 2 strands of rope across the top of a regular halter noseband.  This interweaving secures the 3rd strand of rope and creates a rounded, bulkier noseband that is a bit firmer than a regular rope halter.

CROSS UNDER HALTERS

Prices are listed after the pictures

Cross Under Halters are very versatile pieces of equipment! They are available in regular, extra knots or bosalter styles in any of the halter rope I carry. The Cross Under Halter is constructed in the same way as my regular rope halters except, as I make it, I space the nose knots lower on the sides and tie in solid brass or stainless steel rings there and also in the jaw knots.

There are 2 options for the cross under straps - same price for either one:

With Snaps:  I splice in a small bolt snap (nickel or brass) to connect to the jaw knot ring and tie a double overhand knot to create a loop on the other end to connect your reins. The snaps will fit through the nose knot rings so the straps can be removed and re-attached.

crossunder, snaps, ng,no, cb noseband closeup.jpg (125087 bytes)

crossunder, snaps, ng,no, top cb noseband closeup.jpg (116832 bytes)

No hardware:  I make eye splices on each end.  The halter end has a flat braid splice since the length of the strap is shorter than the minimum spacing required between double braid eye splices.  The rein end has a larger eye splice that will fit through the nose knot ring after the other end is looped through the jaw knot ring.  Sounds confusing but the pictures should clarify.

NOTE:  The cross under straps are not reins.  They extend out from the sides of the halter only a few inches.  You must order reins separately or use your own.

I add an adjustable chin strap to snug up the noseband. This keeps the bridle in the correct position and prevents it from riding up the face or sliding around the nose when you engage the reins. The chin strap is made with the polyester lacing cord - choose a color to match or contrast with the straps or halter.

Cross under halters work by applying pressure to parts of the head. With the straps crisscrossed under the jaw, when you pick up on your left rein, the pressure is felt on the right side of the face and the horse learns to yield away from that pressure. When you pick up on both reins, the straps tighten from both sides and pressure is felt over the poll and under the jaw. This gives you more contact and leverage and thus more stopping power than a simple side pull provides. Since the action of a cross under bridle is different than what your horse is probably used to, please introduce this new equipment slowly. Some people think these bridles transmit too much information and confuse the horse; others love it and find their horse to be very "light" when using it. Since my rope version is much less expensive than the leather version, it’s a good way to try it out without investing a lot of money. And you can always use my version in different ways if the original set-up doesn’t work for you or your horse.

You can attach the cross under straps through the nose knot rings and up to the jaw knot rings on the same side – without crisscrossing them underneath. Or you can remove the chin strap and thread the cross under straps through the nose knot rings, making an "Indian Bosal" where the noseband tightens when you pull with both reins. Or you can remove the cross under straps completely and attach your reins directly to the nose knot rings and use it as a side pull halter. And of course, you can always remove everything (except the rings) and use it as a regular halter. Like I said – a very versatile piece of equipment!

I no longer put the ring on the rein end of the cross under straps but I have left some pictures here with that version.  Everything else is the same.

LABELING OPTIONS

I have heat shrink tubing labels available for halters.  Add your horse's name to "horse-alize" his or her tack.  Or have your name printed on the label for security purposes - great if you board at a large facility where items tend to "disappear".  Trainers can have their own private label to identify their business and specify halter sizes.  Y Knot Rope Tack halters, side pull halters, etc.  have a label on the poll strap (off side) identifying my brand and the size.

I will need to know if you want a personalized label on your equipment and where you want it when you place your order.  Your label can be placed anywhere, depending on the size of the rope, but the usual places are centered on the cheek piece or on the poll strap near the off side knot.

Available only in white with black printing, in 2 sizes:

3/8" diameter for the cheek or jaw piece (around 1 strand of rope) - 1 or 2 lines of text (3 lines are possible but will be very small).  This label must be put on the rope as I make the halter - I cannot add it later. This diameter is also used on one strand of the poll strap of halters made with 5/16" cord and must be put on before the tie end is finished.

1/2" diameter for poll strap (around 2 strands of rope) - up to 3 lines of text.  I can add this label after the halter is made (1/4" rope only) as long as the tie end is finished with the waxed cord whipping.  It must be put on before I braid any button knot on the tie end.

Price is $1.50 per label for lengths up to 1 1/2".

Call for pricing on longer labels or logo, etc.
