A quick, easy way to attach reins to bits or halter loops without having to deal with leather maintenance or hardware! Great for areas that are very humid (leather can mold or rot, hardware can rust) or very dry (cracked leather).
The button loops are attached through eye splices on the ends of the rope - any diameter of rope for the reins will work with this style. I make the button loops with matching or contrasting 1/4" rope (soft double braid only) by tying what I call a crown knot with the ends. This is a unique knot that I came up with myself. The rope ends are secured by melting -- but on the sides of the knot instead of the top. So instead of a hard melted glob, there is a nice "crown" of rope that makes a button on the end of the loop. I then add a braided ring knot that slides to open and close the "button hole".
The loop end with the sliding knot should fit through most bit rings (at least 3/4" diameter). The usual length of button loops is about 4" long (after attaching to reins) but I can make them shorter if you are using a full cheek snaffle so they won't interfere with the bars. I can also make them longer. You can also add snaps.
Below are options for how you can have your button loops attached and also if you want them "plain" or "fancy".

Check List for ordering Loop Reins with connectors and/or snaps:
1. Length of reins
2. Diameter of rope
3. Color of rope
4. Type of connectors
5. Color of connectors - rope and sliding knots or leather and buckles, etc.
6. Add snaps? If so, what type
7. Customization, if any (trim, knots, etc.)
The rope is back spliced, then the leather water straps are attached to the ends with leather laces that go through the rope. Attach to bits, side pull rings, etc., or add snaps by untying/tying the leather laces - but be careful not to pull the laces out of the rope. Make sure to keep the laces tied snuggly so the pull will be on the rope, not the leather laces.
These can be used with or without the brass, nickel or stainless steel scissor snaps (also brass or nickel bolt snaps) that I carry for reins.
$3.00/set of 2 in brass or nickel; $8.00/set of 2 in stainless steel
The usual choice of snaps is brass, nickel or stainless steel scissor snaps but I also have medium brass or nickel bolt snaps if you want a snap with a different type of opening. Both types are swivel snaps so your reins will not get twisted and they all have about the same size opening for attaching to the bit, etc.

1/2" rope: $69.00 ± $1.00/ft
5/8" rope: $72.15 ± $1.35/ft
You can purchase water straps separately (leather lace included). I use a hemostat clamp to insert the lace through the rope so you will need some type of similar tool (needle nose pliers) to connect the water straps to rope reins.

Jesus looked at them and said,
"With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
Mark 10:27 NIV
Loop reins (sometimes called closed reins) are the style of choice for most natural horsemanship methods. They are a continuous piece of rope with both ends attached to the bit or rope halter, bosal, etc. They make it easy to slide your hands down the reins for direct contact and to give immediate release. You also don’t have to worry about dropping a split rein or deal with the extra rope of a mecate all the time.
On this page, you will find reins with connectors that attach to bits, halter loops, sidepull rings, etc. I make rope connectors and leather connectors - all of which can be used with or without snaps. I can also splice snaps directly into the rope.
Snap options, left to right: medium nickel bolt, medium brass bolt, nickel scissor, brass scissor, stainless steel scissor snap next to ruler

All reins in this category can be used with or without snaps.
The usual choice of snaps on reins is the scissor snap. I stock scissor snaps in stainless steel, brass or nickel. I also have medium brass or nickel bolt snaps if you want a snap with a different type of opening. Both kinds of snaps have a swivel ring so your reins will not get twisted and they all have about the same size opening for attaching to the bit, etc. Please let me know if you want the finished length to include the snaps and I will adjust the rope length accordingly.
Price for a set of 2 snaps:
$3.00 for nickel or brass - scissor or bolt
$8.00 for stainless steel scissor

nickel snaps - 1/2' blue, 5/8" black
I braid an additional ring knot around all strands of the button loop after I insert it through the eye of the rope. This makes the button loop permanently attached but you can still slide the rope through the ring knot if you want to change where you want the button to end up. You can also move things a little occasionally to change the wear pattern. As with the loose attachment - you can choose the plain crown knot buttons or add the pineapple knots or lone star knots over the top of the crown knot.

How long should you order your reins?
The finished length of these types of reins is counted from end to end - including any and all connectors. When ordering reins, please specify the total length desired - bit to bit, noseband to noseband, etc. I will adjust the length of the rope according to the type of connector you want so they will come out to the correct length. Since this is a handmade product, I cannot guarantee the reins will be exactly a certain length but they will be within 1 - 2".

Lone Star Knot Buttons
These are a combination of the buckle straps described above and the water straps described below. They have the conway buckle for easy on/off and are permanently attached to back spliced reins. Braiding cord goes through the rope and the leather straps and is secured with a double overhand knot.
Most people use these alone but you can add snaps:
$3.00/set of 2 in brass or nickel; $8.00/set of 2 in stainless steel
The eye splices on the ends of the rope are small enough so the connectors will not fall off but the button loops are "loose" so you can change the way you attach them (simple loop or figure 8) and therefore change the wear pattern. I braid the ring knot onto the button loop after I put it through the eye splice of the rope so while you can probably work it through the hole if you ever want or need to take them off, it will not come off on it's own.
Pineapple Knot Buttons
The normal loop laid out flat is about 12" long. Let me know if you want it longer or shorter.
Price:
$8.00 for one crown knot button loop with 1 sliding ring knot
$16.00 for a set of 2 crown knot button loops,1 sliding ring knot on each loop
These act somewhat like mini slobber straps - creating a hinge with the reins. They are attached through eye splices at the ends of the reins and can be used with any diameter of rope. Choose a stainless steel or solid brass conway buckle. They add about 4" to each end of the rope and are available in 3 styles:

You can customize your reins with pineapple knots or lone star knots. I braid these decorative knots over the crown knots. The medium pineapple knot is the best size. I can also make the lone star knot (shown in the permanent attachment section below) even though it is a bit smaller. These decorative knots are pretty pricey because of the time and skill involved in braiding them, but what a beautiful way to customize your reins!

The finished length of this type of reins is counted from end to end including the snaps. Snaps are permanently attached to the rope with eye splices. With this method, the snaps cannot be removed or replaced if broken. I recommend the stainless steel scissor snaps for this style because they are sturdier and will never rust.
This style creates a quick on/off and provides a swivel so your reins don't get twisted but extra care will be needed to guard against the snap being broken. Keeping your reins off the ground so they don't get stepped on and never tying up with your reins are good preventitive measures.

Leather connectors can be used alone or with snaps. The advantage of having leather connectors when using snaps is if a snap ever breaks (which all hardware tends to do, no matter the quality), it can easily be replaced and your reins are still useable. I offer a few options for reins with leather connectors so you can choose what works best for your style of riding.
I make the connectors with 5/8" wide, heavy weight leather. The ends are rounded and the edges are beveled but there is nothing fancy about them - no tooling, etc. They are plain but sturdy and functional.
Leather options are black or burgundy Latigo leather; dark brown or medium brown Bridle Strap leather.

Some people can have a set of reins for many years with no issues, others can have their reins for a month and break a snap. Accidents can happen. If a snap does break (which can be a good thing in some instances), I can repair the reins but resplicing the rope will shorten them by about a foot. This will change the spacing of any custom trim on the reins.

As with most of my products, I can add braided trim or knots to customize your reins. This can be for identification, decoration or to mark specific places on the reins to aid in training the horse or the rider. Many customers request a center marker knot - a handy little addition! Visit the Reins - Custom Trim Options for more information.
I can make loop reins in any length in a variety of rope diameters. The usual length for loop reins is in the 9 - 10' range but I have made them as short as 6' and as long as 13'. The most common diameter is 1/2". I carry 3/8" rope for those who want something lighter and thinner - nice for kids or adults with small hands. The 5/8" rope is a good choice for those wanting something a little thicker and more substantial in the hand.
They work great as a snap alternative on a lead rope or as a replacement if your lead rope snap breaks. Some customers have ordered a set to keep in their saddle bags for emergencies. Others use them to attach things to their saddle, etc.
NATURAL HORSEMANSHIP PRODUCTS
This style of reins gives you the option to change or replace snaps. The ends of the rope are spliced with a flat braid splice (the core is removed from the double braid rope) so the loop will fit through the ring of the snap and the "lump" is not as big and heavy as it would be with a full splice. While the flat braid splice is not as strong as the full double braid splice, reins do not get as much stress and abuse as lead ropes so there should be no issues. The finished length of these reins is counted from end to end, including the snaps. The loops will get tighter after the reins are used a bit - the pictures below are all of new reins. The same snap options shown above for spliced in snaps are available for this style of reins.
